VANCOUVER NORTH SHORE GYRO CLUB

OUR MISSION:

We are an International organization that provides a setting for our members and friends to socialize and to have fun.

Origins of Gyro

Gyro came into existence in 1912 in Cleveland, Ohio.  Three young men had just graduated from university and formed a club, later to be named a Gyro Club, to continue their good fellowship that had developed during their college days.  Gyro came to Canada in 1919 with the first club formed in Toronto.  The Vancouver Gyro Club was founded the following year in 1920 and will be celebrating their 100th Anniversary next fall in 2020.

The long history of the North Shore Gyro Club 75years

In 1947, some prominent West and North Vancouver businessmen including Danny Smith and Al Colas were invited to experience a lunch with the members of The Vancouver Gyro Club at a downtown hotel.  They observed a group of men who were all wearing Gyro lapel pins having a great and wonderful time with no other apparent reason than enjoying each other’s company. They struck up a conversation with these gentlemen to find out more about them and the club they represented.

When they learned of the purpose and objectives of Gyro, they were so impressed they immediately started gathering a group of businessmen together to form the Gyro Club of Hollyburn.  The Club held meetings twice a month at FRANK BAKER’s Restaurant in West Vancouver for their dinner meetings.  Many of their meetings included their spouses attending.  After meeting many years at Frank Bakers, his restaurant was closed and the membership moved to the Hollyburn Country Club and later to The Seymour Golf and Country Club for their dinners & meetings.   About ten years ago, the members decided to rename the club to the North Shore Gyro Club in order to better reflect its membership.

Today, the social aspect of Gyro is emphasized by the club and is strongly supported by an active club. Gyro friendship, which was so appealing to Clarence Lougheed in 1912, has consistently remained the core concept of the North Shore Gyro Club with unsurpassed activities and the club has maintained its membership by recruiting recent retirees and newcomers to the North Shore.
